The media, activists and non-governmental organizations condemned simultaneously on Don Sahong dam project in Laos

The criticisms outlined in consultation workshop was held on December 11, 12 at Pakse. It was considered as a form.
In the first days of the consultation program, officials and representatives of civil society organizations in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand visited the expected construction sector which has been prepared since last year.
Activists said that consultation workshop was delayed, which took place four months after the plan, would only redefine on the decision to build the dam in Laos. Meanwhile, the pre-consultation process of the project for six months was announced on January 10, 2014 but it actually delayed in July, 2014.
At this workshop, representative of Vietnam River Network has conveyed the opinions of people in the Mekong River Delta (MRD). Accordingly, the member organizations and Vietnam River Network has organized a series of activities to collect comments and recommendations of the Mekong Delta residents on the Don Sahong dam project in November and December 2014.
It held 15 consultation workshops in the MRD with the participation of 1,000 people in the region. All of the delegates expressed their concern and their worries about the unpredictable impact of cross-border problems and oppose to build Don Sahong dam in the workshop.
The Phnom Penh Post newspaper reported that two non-governmental organizations as the International Rivers (IR) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has boycotted the consultation.
“Given that there is no clear indication from the MRC of the scope and expected outcome of the consultation process, and that all indications point to the dam being constructed anyway” said Teak Seng, WWF’s Greater Mekong conservation director.
The Nation of Thailand, Phnom Penh Post of Cambodia simultaneously criticized Don Sahong project dam is gambling with the future of river and millions of people in their newspaper on December 11,12.
The Phnom Penh Post also posted the document of Save the Mekong on stop immediately the dam which will seriously threat to fisheries, food security and future of the Mekong region.
“It is critical that decisions related to development on the Mekong are based on agreement between all four MRC member countries, and most importantly, by the millions of people who depend upon the river" - article on Phnom Penh Post emphasized and called to strengthen the cooperation of the Mekong region countries to protect the river.
