Project Title: Analysis of environmental and social costs and risks of hydro-electric dams, with a case study of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant

Objective: To carry out a deep analysis of environmental and social costs and risks of hydro-electric dams, with a case study of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant to inform relevant policy making processes in Viet Nam on the causes and extent of environmental and social costs and risks of hydro-electricity dams in Viet Nam, through general data analysis and in particular a case study of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant in Quang Nam province

Activities:

  • Reviews and analyzes existing studies and regulations on hydropower in Viet Nam.
  • The expert team prepare a fact sheet about all hydropower dams based on collection of secondary data and information (i.e. basis data on hydropower dams and reservoirs in Vietnam including generation capacities, investment costs and their position concerning to potential earthquakes and other dam safety, costs associated with agreed risk mitigation measures and expected mitigation measures)
  • Describe the popular and official perception of current risks emanating from the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant related to earthquake risks and dam operation based on the use of media and official report
  • Doing survey in Song Tranh 2 in order to collect relevant primary information
