Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, student in Enviroment Faculity – University of Science in Ho Chi Minh city, researched and created an alum water filtration system which designs simple, cheap, use easy and specially help rural residents can be used clean water in their daily routines.

Thuy Trang said: “Being use clean groundwater, the people often use traditional methods such as deposit lime, ashes, alum or filter water system from overseas market. Besides, they also buy chemical to get rid of alum, which is very expensive and not suitable with economical stituations in rural. And this practice, I researched and created a water filter system made by burned-clay. It treated groundwater, which is infected by alum and people can be used clean water at ease as well as not spend a lot of money.”

The filter itself made of clay and sawdust. This material is abundant, cheap but high water filter productivity and suitable with economical stituations in rural.
The clay and sawdust are mixed together in water according to certain rate. After that, it is created a pot or any form and burned in pottery production. When it is burned, the sawdust fired totally and it remained tiny holes which is capable of increasing the contact area, increasing productivity to treat alum water filter.

“ I chose groundwater sample that is  affected by alum exceed permitted standards of residential  area in Le Minh Xuan and Phong Phu commune, Binh Chinh district, Ho Chi Minh city to test with the system. After the water is treated by filter system, it achieved productivity above 99%. In addition to treating alum water, the system the ability to handle criterion as chlorine, turbidity, bad smell in the water.” Trang affirmed.

According to calculations, the family has three people and use of 100 water liters daily, they only need about 5 filter systems (5,000 VND/set) are enough water. After they use about 3, 4 months, they can clean filter system and reusable many times.
Dr. To Thi Hien, Head of Environment Faculity - University of Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City, assessed: " the filter system is capable of handling alum better than current methods that people lived on alum earth is applied. Specifically, the handling iron’s ability is very high efficiency and sample water achieves quality standards. In addition, the filter also handles pretty good the ammonium ion, chloride, turbidity, hardness ... With the ability to handle iron alum like this, the application of burned-clay filter system is surely realizable. Moreover, the method of manufacturing the filter is simple and consequently it is cheap, suitable for local people in rural areas. "
